Red Mountain heats up at The Grand Tasting
The Grand Tasting, Taste WA’s premier food and wine event was as always, incredible, and the setup of the event even better than years past. With 350+ wineries and restaurants in attendance, patrons had their fill of sampling the best of what Washington has to offer, which I already knew, was the best food and wine scene in the country. Amongst the amazing wineries present, I was particularly impressed by the Red Mountain producers and growers, whose wine’s have exponentially improved over the last decade, and in my opinion, are becoming the powerhouse of Washington like Russian River Valley or Moon Mountain are to California. This article will talk about some of the best places representing Red Mountain this year and some must haves from their wineries. But first, a little Red Mountain 101:
Nestled in the southeastern corner of Washington State lies a little slice of viticultural paradise known as the Red Mountain. This area may be one of Washington's smallest AVAs, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in the quality and intensity of its wines. The Red Mountain AVA has rapidly become the epicenter for high-quality fruit in the state, with a reputation for producing some of the most sought-after grapes and, consequently, some of the most celebrated wines in the region. The story of Red Mountain is one of transformation and tenacity. What was once an uninhabited stretch of land, perceived as inhospitable for grape growing, has been turned into a powerhouse of wine production. The first vines were planted in 1975, and since then, the AVA has flourished, now home to many of the state's most esteemed vineyards.
The secret to Red Mountain's success lies in its unique climate and geographical features. The area benefits from a desert-like climate, with long, sunny days and cool nights, which are perfect for ripening grapes while maintaining their acidity. The soil is rich in iron and calcium carbonate, lending the wines a distinct minerality and complexity. These factors contribute to the creation of wines with intensity, power, and elegance. Visitors to the Red Mountain AVA can expect a warm welcome and an immersive wine experience. The region boasts one of the most densely clustered collections of tasting rooms in Washington State, making it an ideal destination for wine enthusiasts. From the modern tasting room of Col Solare Winery, perched atop the bench of Red Mountain, to the biodynamic estate of Hedges Family Estate, reminiscent of a French château, there's a diverse range of wineries to explore. Each winery in the Red Mountain AVA has its own story and approach to winemaking. Fidélitas Wines, for example, adheres to the mantra "faithful, loyal, and true," focusing on Bordeaux varieties and modern craft winemaking. Kiona Vineyards & Winery, a pioneering family-owned operation, manages several estate plots and sells fruit to over 60 wineries across the Pacific Northwest.
The Red Mountain AVA Alliance, a nonprofit trade association, works collaboratively with the vineyards and wineries to support and promote the region. Their efforts ensure that Red Mountain continues to thrive and innovate, contributing to Washington's reputation as a premier wine-producing state. For those looking to explore the wines of Red Mountain, there's no shortage of options. Whether you're a fan of robust Cabernet Sauvignon, silky Merlot, or spicy Syrah, the AVA's offerings are sure to impress.
Now for the good stuff: the best Red Mountain producers and wineries you need to experience! (listed alphabetically, not in order of preference)

Chasing Rain
This boutique winery, situated on the slopes of Red Mountain, is a testament to the beauty and bounty that can emerge from the most unexpected places. The winery takes its name from the scant 5 inches of annual rainfall that grace the region, a stark contrast to the western part of the state. This scarcity of rain is not a curse but a blessing in disguise for the vintners at Chasing Rain. It grants them control over irrigation, compelling the grapes to struggle, to reach deep into the earth for sustenance, and in doing so, to develop the complex flavors that characterize the winery's offerings. Chasing Rain's varietals are a nod to the unique terroir of western Washington. The Ice Age left behind a rich tapestry of sand, silt, and rock, while the gentle southern slope of Red Mountain and the consistent breezes contribute to an idyllic heat profile. These elements coalesce to create conditions that are nothing short of perfect for growing grapes that yield consistently extraordinary wines. The winery's selection includes the 2018 Red Blend, a harmonious marriage of flavors and aromas that speak to the soul of Red Mountain. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a bold statement, a wine that stands tall with its robust body and rich taste. The 2019 Merlot, with its velvety texture, is a gentle reminder of the finesse that Chasing Rain Winery brings to the table.
